M.Sc. diploma project in cutting technology with Aurobay Powertrain and Ovako Steel

Method to rank grindability of drive shafts aimed at internal combustion and electric drive trains

Background

Grinding is the final machining process step of many transmission parts. Fine tolerances, surface roughness and functional properties are obtained in this process.

Grindability as term, widely covers the process data, the characteristics of the grinding wheel, as well as of the (steel) work piece, not to forget the machine set-up. Still today, grinding is to some extent based on trial and error testing on the shop floor.

This project aims at developing a grinding test method that enable ranking of the grindability of microalloyed steels often found in transmission shafts.

Diploma project, proposed content (proposed):

A literature survey is proposed as introduction to the grinding process, engineering steels and their applications and some about relevant hardening methods.

Experimental work: After an initial acquaintance to the facilities of engine production at Aurobay Powertrain Engineering (formerly Volvo Cars’ engine factory in Skövde), the goal of the diploma thesis is to develop a method that enables differentiation of the wear and degradation of the grinding wheel and its response with different work piece steels.

A grinding machine + technician are allocated and set up for this project at Aurobay. A supplier of grinding wheels is defined and included in the project. Ovako supplies micro-alloyed steels with well thought out variation of inclusion contents and alloying elements, see link below:

Time plan and report: The work is planned and carried out during a period of 18 weeks. Industrial supervisors will be available at both Aurobay (Björn Karlsson) and at Ovako (Thomas Björk). A M.Sc. diploma report will be written and presented both in the academic environment at Chalmers, as well as at the industrial partners.
