Backgrund and purpose

  • A considerable share of the produced billets are quality controlled in the Billet Inspection facility, where visible defects are removed by grinding or entire billets may be scrapped.
  • Our understanding of the potential effects that the defects can have on the rolled products is limited.
  • Implementation of NDT Control Stations in the rolling mill means that potential defects in the rolled products caused by surface defects in the billets will be detected

Research question

  • Investigate how the amount sorted out in the NDT Control Stations are influenced by billet defects
  • Can we exclude from control certain steel grades that today are run through the Billet Inspection Facility
