Background and description

OVAKO Ring Department produces hot-rolled seamless rings tailored for our customers. The rings are used in high demands products and applications, offering extended service life and reduced carbon footprint.

Tooling costs constitute a significant portion of our manufacturing expenses. The high temperatures and forces involved in rolling and forging lead to considerable wear and tear. To prevent this from negatively impacting our products, we dedicate significant effort to inspecting and replacing tools. Extending tool life reduces production interruptions and tool consumption, enhancing our competitiveness and conserving our planet’s resources

We manufacture our tools primarily using our own steel

Description

You will evaluate the operating conditions of our tools and propose optimizations to extend their lifespan. Our facility includes several rolling mills with varying tool conditions. You will analyze these conditions in real-time during production, review our logged data, and integrate findings from literature studies to formulate recommendations. We anticipate that your suggestions will address tool material properties, such as chemical composition, and operational parameters, with an emphasis on temperature control and enhanced cooling techniques.

Research question and/or objective

  • How do the varying operating conditions of rolling mills affect the lifespan of the tools used in our facility?
  • What are the optimal tool material properties, including chemical composition, that can enhance the durability and performance of tools in rolling mills?
  • How can temperature control and cooling techniques be optimized to improve the operational efficiency and lifespan of tools in our rolling mills?
